Makes 6 single-serving crumbles
INGREDIENTS:
- Apple Layer
- 1 Tbs unsalted butter
- 3 large apples (480g) peeled and cubed 1/4 - 1/2 inch thick
- 3 Tbs brown sugar
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
- Topping
- 2/3 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- pinch of salt
- 6 Tbs unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
DIRECTIONS:
- Preheat oven to 350 F. Brush inside of ramekins with 1 Tbs melted butter to grease them, and line them on a baking sheet.
- In a large bowl, stir the apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg together. Divide apples into ramekins.
- Make crumble topping: Using a fork, mix the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt together in a medium bowl.
- Fold melted butter into mix. Keep the mixture as large crumbles and do not overmix.
- Sprinkle evenly over the top of the apples in ramekins. Press down into apples if needed, but it's fine to have crumble piled high.
- Bake for 32 - 36 minutes or until topping is lightly toasted and apples appear softened.
- Remove from the oven and serve warm or with ice cream.
NOTES:
This was much easier to make with the kids instead of apple pie, and is a great use of pick-yourself-apples from the orchard where you might not remember which kind of apples you got.
